HOW DOES CAVITY OCCUR?? Food plays an important role in cavity formation. The hardest layer of tooth is known as Enamel which is composed of various minerals. Whenever we eat foods and drinks that contain sugars or starch some of the particles stick to the teeth and remain there for several hours forming a layer over the tooth`s surface known as PLAQUE. Our mouth contains millions of bacteria. As we are not in a habit of night brushing these ba...

7 HABITS ...THAT ARE HARMFUL FOR YOUR TEETH

1.NAIL BITING  Nail biting may be a little less common these days but I still see it quite often. It can cause teeth and fillings to chip off and can also cause wearing off of enamel. POSSIBLE SOLUTION :-  Paint the nails with a bitter taste polish.  2. ACIDIC DRINKS  Cold drinks and other aerated drinks that is more common than milk or any other liquid in between adults is the main cause that led to wearing off of enamel surface. This helps in decaying process. The sugar content that is too high in it promotes decay. POSSIBLE SOLUTION :- Avoid these drinks, have some water through out the day at intervals. Avoid drinking aerated drinks, if must, sip by sip instead drink it in one go and rinse after that to remove acids. 3.ICE CUBE CHEWING Chewing on any ice cube will not make you "RAMBO."Teeth are meant for chewing but not ice cubes. POSSIBLE SOLUTION :- Avoid eating ice cubes. 4. BRUSHING TOO HARD Brushing too hard can lead to we...

FLOSSING - Keep Your Teeth Healthy And Clean

There are a lot of personal findings that a dentist come across his life. What I have observed here as a " Dentist in Rohini " is that almost 30 - 40 % of people lie about there Flossing habits. I also meet a lot of dental colleagues and have visited a lot of "Dental clinic in Rohini" and asked questions and observed that this is the scenario all over. The question that lingers in my mind is that why people find it so difficult to Floss, why they avoid doing Flossing.  Do you know only 2 people out of 10 Floss According to Dentist worldwide, One of the most important habit to develop is Flossing. The benefits cannot be overlooked. One of the main cause of proximal caries ( decay in teeth on contacting surface ) is because of lack of Flossing. A lot of gum disease are also caused by the improper Flossing. In India, Only 2 out of 10 people floss. A lot are not aware of its benefits. If one already has a gum disease then it is must for the person to floss in...

Facing Bad Breath Problem!!!!! Here is the solution........

Have you ever wondered when you wake up in the morning and experience a bad taste  or foul smell from your mouth. When you see yourself in mirror and check your tongue and find white-yellowish covering over it.   Bad breath, called Halitosis  results from poor dental health habits. And it can also be made worse by the types of foods you eat and other unhealthy lifestyle habits. Millions of bacteria live in the mouth, particularly on the back of the tongue. The mouth's warm, moist conditions are ideal for the growth of these bacteria. Hence cause bad breath in the mouth. REASONS FOR BAD BREATH : 1.  Poor dental hygiene Damaged toothbrushes leading to poor oral hygiene. Improper brushing and flossing can lead to food lodgement between the teeth which further leads to cavities and periodontal problems.  Going straight to sleep after eating, without brushing your teeth and cleaning your mouth results in poor oral hygiene. 2.  Infections in t...

Only Sugar Causes Cavities!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you sure!!!! Dentist said so!!!!!!

One of the commonest myth is that "Sugar causes cavities". we have heard this a number of times in our life time. but the real question is how much is the truth in this?? lets find out the answer........... what happens when we have something sweet to eat. a little amount of the sugar sticks to the teeth, this sugar finds its place in between teeth or between irregular tooth surface. but sugar itself is harmless if it is present alone. the problem arises that in our oral cavity there are a number of bacteria's working 24 hours. these bacteria also have a increased number in the areas where sugar find its place. sugar act as a food to these bacteria. these bacteria eats sugar and releases some form of acids that actually damages the teeth. we all know enamel is the hardest part of the body but still it is susceptible to the damage by acids. this acid when in contact with the teeth causes enamel to erode away, that causes decay. before a person get to know this the...

WHAT TO CHOOSE? METAL OR CERAMIC BRACES!!!!

WHAT TO CHOOSE? METAL OR CERAMIC BRACES!!!! When a patient enters a Orthodontic clinic He/She is confused whether to go for metal braces or ceramic braces? Orthodontic treatment is generally considered a cosmetic treatment as this is the primary reason behind patient visiting a Orthodontist. But the choice of braces should be more dependent on the longetivity, comfort and ease of treatment in addition to cost to both the patient and the Orthodontist. Based on my personal experience i would prefer metal braces over ceramic for the following reasons :- 1. Cost effective : metal braces are far cost effective than ceramic braces. approx difference would range from Rs.10,000 - 20,000. 2. Longetivity :- although ceramic braces have a very good tooth to bracket bond strength but they lack marginal strength(i.e. they break from corners because of load). so in this regard they have a lesser life than metal brackets.so for this reason they have to be changed which ultimately ...

Dental Implant: why everyone's behind this......

None of us are least worried when a tooth is lost! Traditional removable bridges, which are just short term options, no longer gain satisfaction among patients. Dental implants, the biggest advancements in dentistry, are meant to blend in with your teeth. Dental implant is typically an artificial tooth that is surgically fastened to the jaw to hold a missing tooth. It is made up of Titanium, a metal which is strong light-weighted and durable, ensuring you comfort. Titanium has a special property called ‘Osseo integration’ which literally means “combines with the bone”. Placing Dental implants stabilizes the bone while preventing its loss. Want to restore your smile? Evaluate and qualify yourself with your dentist for the dental implant. Feel Like Your Own Natural Tooth:  Implants are the best solution to tooth loss as they look, fit, feel and function like your natural tooth. Also, they are not visible once they are surgically anchored to your jaw. Look better and feel ...

REIMPLANTATAION :- To do or not to?

REIMPLANTATAION :- To do or not to? A number of cases can be seen which are unresposive to root canal as they have a periapical pathology assosiated with it. In this type of cases what should be the treatment protocol is always a matter of challenge. Small dental lesions like dental abscess can be easily resolved with the help of metapex etc. but larger lesions or we can say granulomatous lesions sometimes require surgical approach.  Question arises which surgical approach to be used. either go for apicocectomy or go for re-implantation? Both the technique have some advantage and disadvantage but before that a fine line exists whether to go for which surgical technique.  Radiograph often reveals periapical radiolucency which is damaging to the health of surrounding bone. now, if the bone is perforated and there is a bony defect we donot have a option for reimplantation. we have to definitely go for apicocectomy but sometimes cases can be seen which can be effec...
