CAVITY!! what it is all about?

CAVITY!! what it is all about?

This is a informational post, it has certain limits, we try to summarize as much as we can, for more details visit our Dental Clinic in Rohini at Kapil Dental Clinic and Implant Center. Cavity also known as tooth decay, has become so common nowadays. Cavities are greatly influenced by our lifestyle, dietary habits, daily routine, oral hygiene habits, presence of fluoride in water and toothpaste.
They are not common only in children but also affecting the adults at the same rate.

HOW DOES CAVITY OCCUR??
Food plays an important role in cavity formation.

The hardest layer of tooth is known as Enamel which is composed of various minerals. Whenever we eat foods and drinks that contain sugars or starch some of the particles stick to the teeth and remain there for several hours forming a layer over the tooth`s surface known as PLAQUE. Our mouth contains millions of bacteria. As we are not in a habit of night brushing these bacteria get enough time to accumulate and feed over there. As a result, these bacteria produce acids that begin to eat away this hardest layer of tooth. The repeated cycles of acid attacks cause the enamel to continue to lose minerals and it weakens the tooth resulting in formation of a CAVITY.
Their types include:
  1. Coronal cavities- They are the most common type of cavities, located on chewing surfaces or between the teeth.
  2. Root cavities- With age the gums recede leaving the root part of the tooth exposed. As there is no enamel covering the roots, it starts to decay.
  3. Recurrent decay- It can form around existing fillings and crowns as these areas may have a tendency to accumulate plaque, which can ultimately lead to decay.
Cavities are a very serious problem because if neglected they spread and destroy the whole tooth. And then only Root canal or Extraction will be the treatment options left.
This is how cavity progresses.

HOW TO KNOW IF YOU HAVE A CAVITY??
Toothache, tooth sensitivity to sweet, hot or cold foods or drinks, or pain when chewing are the symptoms experienced by the patient as the cavity progresses.
So a dental visit is mandatory in every 6 months to have a check of oral cavity. Only a dentist can diagnose a cavity by examining your tooth surface or by taking an x-ray to see if it has spread beyond the enamel layer of tooth. we have the finest of Dentist in Rohini for the detailed examination.

HOW TO PREVENT CAVITIES??
  1. Brush twice in a day and floss daily to remove plaque between the teeth.
  2. Use fluoride containing toothpastes.
  3. Rinse every time you finish with your snacks or meals so that the food does not stuck between your teeth.
  4. Teach your children the proper brushing technique.
Proper Brushing Method

    1. Do visit your dentist and get your existing cavities filled as soon as possible.
    2. Pit and fissure sealants and Fluoride varnish application in both baby and permanent teeth of children can prevent cavity.
    3. Eat a balanced diet and limit the intake of sugary or starch containing foods.
